Just like your skin, your hair needs a regular regimen to look its best. Establishing a proper hair care routine prevents damage, maintains moisture, and keeps your scalp healthy. Here is a universal routine you can adapt based on your hair type.
Step 1: Proper Detangling
Before you even step into the shower, gently brush your dry hair. Brushing dry hair distributes natural oils from your scalp to the ends of your hair. Wet hair is highly fragile and prone to breakage, so detangling beforehand makes the washing process much safer.
Step 2: The Wash (Scalp Focus)
When shampooing, focus entirely on the scalp. The roots are where sebum and dirt accumulate. Vigorously scrubbing the lengths of your hair will only lead to split ends and frizz. Let the suds wash over the ends as you rinse.
Step 3: Conditioning (Ends Focus)
Apply conditioner only to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair. Applying conditioner to the scalp will weigh your hair down and make it look greasy within a day. Leave the conditioner on for at least 3 minutes to allow it to smooth the hair cuticle.
Step 4: Post-Wash Care
Never vigorously rub your hair with a regular cotton towel. Instead, gently squeeze the excess water out with a microfiber towel or a soft cotton t-shirt. Apply a leave-in conditioner or a few drops of hair serum while the hair is damp to lock in moisture.
